Where to find my work

  • by

Thought I’d post an update on where my work is currently exhibited/available, and a little about some of the galleries I show with. I don’t work with many galleries these days, partly as I’m often focused on running the studio and making less work, and partly due to the exhibition landscape changing over the years. I do have a small number of places I work with however, and other venues for one off or occasional exhibitions. I think its really important as an artist to connect with galleries. Although I have the shop at the studio they can reach a different (and far wider!) audience, and are a great way to showcase my work. Occasionally people will say “…oh but what about the commission, why would you pay that?” But a good gallerist/curator will work hard to actively promote, display and sell your work in a professional context and find/liaise with clients and collectors.

For those in or near Edinburgh, my main space is right here in the studio, with the shop open most Fridays and
Saturdays (other times by appointment or if the shutters are up!) Since restablishing the studio in our current location 3 years ago, the shop space has evolved into a great space to sell and show work, including new experimental pieces. Its a great place to meet the public and see their interaction with my work. There are also several special open studio events each year- the next being our Fringe show and open studio event in August. Details to follow…

Also below are the shop dates for April.

Contemporary Ceramics

A London based gallery that I’ve exhibited with for a few years is Contemporary Ceramics – a fantastic specialist gallery that exhibits the work of Craft Potters Association professional members. As well as the physical shop and gallery, they sell work online and have an established clientele.

From their website: “Distinguished studio ceramicists, our makers display the very best of ceramic skill, technique and ambition. Creating highly collectable work, made to the very best standards in ceramic art, we are proud to sell the unique, hand crafted, pieces by our ceramic artists.”

Its important to find a gallery that you can build a relationship with, and is the right context for your work. They are a supportive and knowledgeable gallery, and can reach a much wider audience than I could on my own.

Cone Twelve Gallery

This is a relatively new gallery, located in Caernarfon, North Wales. Again a ceramic specialist space, run by experienced curators Jane and Mike Brumfield.

You can find out more about my work that they have currently here . They have already attracted a number of quality artists to show with them, and are working hard to bring the ceramics on show to a range of collectors. No small feat in the current challenging economic climate! Hopefully I’ll get down there myself for a visit sometime; do check it out if you’re in the area. It looks like a beautiful space.Their website shows the range of artists they are currently working with, and their instagram page has regular updates on featured artists, new work and exhibitions. Looking forward to seeing how it evolves.

Edinburgh Printmakers

Although I’m not a member of the Printmakers, I do have some of my plates in their shop. The studios, gallery and shop is located in Fountainbridge- would highly recommend them for a course or to see one of their regular exhibitions.

Number four gallery

Another gallery I have pieces in is the Number Four Gallery– its located in St. Abbs in the Borders. Lots of other lovely artworks on display there too.

And finally…unfortunately a gallery that is no longer. Lady Mache Gallery was a welcoming and quirky gallery in North Berwick. Run by the late talented and enthusiastic Alison, who had previously run the Union Gallery in Edinburgh. She was incredibly supportive of me and my work, and the stable of artists she worked with. She became a friend, and was also an accomplished artist herself. She will be missed. There will be a commemorative exhibition to celebrate her life in the autumn in Edinburgh…details to follow.
